TotalEnergies EP Uganda launches Road Safety Program for Buliisa District

Buliisa, July 12, 2023 – TotalEnergies EP Uganda has today officially launched the VIA Road Safety Programme aimed at raising road safety awareness among young people aged 10-25 and educate them in safer road behavior through interactive learning methods deployed in schools.

The VIA programme is an initiative by TotalEnergies, Michelin Foundation and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) which was implemented in Uganda starting March 2022. The programme has so far been rolled out in 138 schools in the Tilenga project districts of Buliisa, Nwoya, Pakwach, Hoima, Kikuube and Kampala training over 27,000 pupils on proper road usage. In Buliisa, as a result of this there has been a 33% reduction in reported road crashes within school zones.

“We are pleased to join forces with our partners to deliver a such a crucial safety program in our project area. Safety is our core value, and it encompasses not only our people and assets but also the communities neighbouring our communities. The development of the Tilenga project will lead to an increase in vehicle movements within the area and our ambition is to have zero fatalities associated with the project,” said Mazen ABI-AZAR, Construction Manager TotalEnergies EP Uganda.

The VIA program also comprises a “Train the Trainer” model where schoolteachers are trained as VIA educators.  Over 250 teachers have completed the training and have graduated as VIA road safety educators. The selected teachers are empowered to deliver the VIA road safety program within their respective schools

The programme is being implemented on behalf of TotalEnergies EP Uganda by Safe Way Right Way (SWRW). Speaking at the event the CEO at SWRW, Peter Tibigambwa said, ‘’Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we are pleased to implement this programme on behalf of TotalEnergies EP Uganda. We call upon all stakeholders to embrace and participate in initiatives to protect our children on the roads.

The event was attended by a cross-section of Buliisa district leaders, Project partners, participating teachers, headteachers, school pupils, sub-contractors, “boda-boda” association leaders, commuter taxi association leaders and Government officials from Petroleum Authority of Uganda, Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda Police Force, Uganda National Roads Authority and the media.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Road accidents are the leading cause of death among young people aged 5-29 worldwide, i.e. over 500 young people every day. It is therefore crucial to take action for safer mobility. VIA is a versatile and modular program, developed from an innovative digital platform that provides actual solutions tailored to the issues of each community. Young people think about the risks they may come up against and take on responsibility for their own safety.

The VIA program is in line with TotalEnergies CSR pillar of Road Safety and in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals: 3, 4 & 11 that emphasize healthy living and promotion of well-being for all at all ages, inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities and making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
