TOTALENERGIES EP UGANDA CONDUCTS ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN IN BULIISA DISTRICT

Wednesday 20th July 2022: TotalEnergies EP Uganda (TEPU) together with implementing partners, conducted a road safety awareness campaign in Buliisa District in line with an agreement signed with Safe Way Right Way (SWRW) to undertake road safety initiatives in schools and communities. The two-day program that ran from Monday 18th to Tuesday 19th July 2022, started at Kisomere Primary School in Ngwedo Sub-County, with a road safety talk delivered by TEPU’s Community Liaison Officer, Aden Kasangaki, who shared with learners the importance of obeying road safety rules to minimize dangers like injuries and deaths.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS ON ROAD SAFETY

Addressing the students as the keynote speaker at the event, the Officer in Charge (OC) -Buliisa District, Fidel Bigirimana urged learners to always take caution when crossing the road.

“The major cause of road accidents is over speeding. If you cross the road without looking left and right, you could be knocked dead. Therefore, always remember to check either side of the road before you cross,” he advised learners.

OVER 100 PUPILS ENGAGED ON DAY ONE  

On day one, over 100 pupils were engaged in a physical demonstration on how to cross a busy road while keenly observing the different road signs and demarcations.

Day two activities extended to the community with focus on Masaka Village and Wanseko Sub-County, where Bigirimana emphasized the importance of boda-boda riders obeying traffic laws to minimize accidents. He also advised drivers and riders to approach his office for guidance on how to secure driving permits.

COMMUNITIES SPEAK OUT

Kisembo Hassan, a resident of Masaka village appreciated the great work being done by TEPU and partners, where he further requested for an annual refresher training for road safety in the communities. TEPU staff were joined at the events by sector regulator Petroleum Authority Uganda (PAU), implementation partners including Gauff Consultants Uganda Ltd (GCU), McDermott and the Uganda Police Force.

ABOUT OUR ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN

With traffic in the Albertine region expected to double over the coming years due to increased oil and gas activities coupled with newly upgraded infrastructure, TEPU in line with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillar of ensuring people’s wellbeing through road safety initiatives, will together with other partners continue to implement different road safety activities in schools and communities in the Albertine Region. A total of 116 primary and secondary schools from Buliisa, Hoima, Kikuube, Nwoya and Pakwach have been earmarked to participate in the campaign.
